Roma manager hints at Manchester United Chris Smalling transfer development

Roma manager Paulo Fonseca has stated that there could be an update regarding Chris Smalling 'over the next few days' as the Italian side push for a permanent transfer.

England international Smalling enjoyed a successful loan stint with the Serie A side last season and both Roma and Smalling want to make the move permanent this summer.

Despite contact between United and the Italian side, an agreement regarding the defender has not yet been agreed, but Smalling has been training in a separate bubble at Carrington this week ahead of a possible permanent move away.

Speaking in a pre-match press conference ahead of Roma's Serie A match against Verona, Fonseca revealed he is in regular contact with Smalling.

"It's not an easy transfer window. Along with the CEO and the chairman we are working hard to find the best options for the squad. There are a few areas we still need to address but I am happy with the work we are doing," he said.

"I am in regular contact with Chris Smalling, I spoke to him yesterday. He wants to come back to Roma and we want to have him back. I think that there could be an update over the next few days."
