Roma fans give former Liverpool star Gini Wijnaldum wild reception as PSG exit nears

Former Liverpool midfielder Gini Wijnaldum was greeted with a hero's welcome as he arrived at Rome airport ahead of completing a temporary switch to Jose Mourinho's side ahead of the new campaign.

The 32-year-old has endured a difficult 12 months since he left Merseyside. Upon the expiration of his contract, he joined Ligue 1 giants Paris Saint-Germain but failed to establish himself as a key member of Mauricio Pochettinho's title-winning side last campaign.

The Parisians' supporters also appeared not to take a keen liking to the midfielder. He was voted the league's worst signing of the season during his maiden campaign in the French capital.

However, as he now closes in on a season-long move to AS Roma, Wijnaldum has been given a wonderful reception at the Aeroporti di Roma when he landed on Thursday evening.

As the Dutchman made his way through the hundreds of Roma fans queuing to capture a glimpse of their new midfielder at the airport, chants of "Du, Du, Du, Du, Du, Du, Gini Wijnaldum" could be heard.

That was of course Wijnaldum's famous Kop anthem during his five-year stint at Anfield, where he won the Premier League and the Champions League.
