Rolls-Royce, HAL joint venture doubles down on India manufacturing

New Delhi: International Aerospace Manufacturing Private Ltd (IAMPL), the high-stakes joint venture between Rolls-Royce and Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd (HAL), on Wednesday unveiled a massive 12-acre expansion of its manufacturing hub at Tamil Nadu's Hosur in line with its aim to bolster aviation supply chain.

This state-of-the-art facility aims to become a critical nerve centre for the production of sophisticated jet engine components to power the company's domestic and international aerospace markets.

The production hub will strengthen advanced aerospace manufacturing capabilities in India and enhance IAMPL's capacity to produce world-class compressor and turbine components, Rolls-Royce said.

IAMPL, a 50:50 joint venture between Rolls-Royce and HAL, has been manufacturing high-precision machined and special-processed parts for technologically-advanced jet engines since 2012, according to Rolls-Royce.

The new facility was inaugurated by Rolls-Royce India's Executive Vice President Sashi Mukundan, HAL's Chairman and Managing Director Ravi alongside IAMPL's CEO Seenivasan Balasubramanian.

"This joint venture with HAL is not only testament to our long-standing commitment to 'Make in India', it is an example of the sustained efforts that have gone into the creation of a strong, resilient aerospace and defence ecosystem in the country," Mukundan said.

"We intend to establish India as a strategic 'home market' and remain focused on developing future-ready capabilities here built on innovation, partnership and engineering excellence," he said.

Building on the success of its established operations in Bengaluru, where it manufactures complex parts for the Trent family of engines, IAMPL expanded its manufacturing footprint to Hosur in 2024.

The expansion diversified its product portfolio to serve both civil and defence aerospace programmes.

IAMPL has been playing a critical role in supporting Rolls-Royce's global supply chain as well as the requirements of other leading engine manufacturers.

In his remarks, Mukundan said IAMPL is already a benchmark facility within Rolls- Royce's global manufacturing ecosystem, and it will play a significant role as the engineering giant is moving towards growing its sourcing 10-fold from India, in line with future programmes and partnerships.

"With a strong legacy spanning nine decades and a growing footprint, Rolls-Royce already plays an important role in powering, protecting and connecting India across civil aerospace, defence and power systems," he said.

Mukundan said Rolls-Royce's "solutions are powering significant platforms operated by the Indian armed forces, and provide uninterrupted power for critical infrastructure."

These initiatives are further backed by local partnerships, joint ventures and academic collaborations, he said.

The HAL chairman and managing director said the state-run aerospace major is pleased to witness the expansion and continued growth of IAMPL.

"As part of our shared vision to advance India's aerospace and defence industry, IAMPL is playing a key role in building advanced, future-ready industrial capabilities within the country," Ravi said.

"We are confident that these advanced manufacturing capabilities will significantly contribute to India's vision of indigenous technology development, while further enhancing the nation's standing in the global aerospace and defence value chain," he noted.

IAMPL's CEO Balasubramanian said the expansion of IAMPL's Hosur facility marks a significant step in scaling up the manufacturing capabilities to meet the evolving requirements of our customers.

"With enhanced capacity for high-precision compressor and turbine components, we are strengthening our ability to deliver best-in-class quality and reliability to support both domestic and global programmes. Our continued focus remains on efficiency and building a resilient, high-performance manufacturing ecosystem," he said.

The IAMPL has been part of the Rolls-Royce "high-performing supplier group" for the past five years.
