Rollout of 20mph zones drives forward in Renfrewshire as road safety measures welcomed

The rollout of 20mph zones in Renfrewshire is driving forward as steps are taken to boost road safety in the local authority.

Work is being carried out to convert previously advisory 'Twenty's Plenty' areas into mandatory speed limits, which are enforceable by cops.

Progress is also being made on assessing other locations that may be suitable for 20mph zones, with information to be fed back to Transport Scotland at the end of this month to allow a national position to be reviewed.

The measures follow a council policy agreed in November 2021, which aims to halve the number of people seriously injured and killed on the roads by 2030.

An update was included in a report to Wednesday's infrastructure, land and environment policy board, which was welcomed by elected members.

"I would just like to welcome the 20mph zones," Councillor Chris Gilmour, Labour group environment spokesperson, said. "I think that can only be a good thing in some of the areas over the county."

This perspective was supported by his party colleague and group leader Councillor Iain McMillan, who asked that members were kept up to date on where and when they would be introduced.

The Johnstone South and Elderslie rep said: "I'm a big fan of the 20mph zones.

"Where I live there's quite a number of them – particularly because I live near a number of schools – so I'm just trying to make sure that local members are notified when they're coming in and where they are likely to be going. That would be useful."

SNP councillor Audrey Doig, a representative for Houston, Crosslee and Linwood, said: "The 20mph zones, a few villages in my ward have been crying out for this for years, particularly Houston.

"They will be more than happy to know that this is coming and coming quicker – hopefully this year – than we've had before.

"So, power to everybody's elbow and let's drive slower."
