Rolling Stones star Ronnie Wood tells Mick Jagger to stay strong as they cancel tour

Rolling Stones star Ronnie Wood has told bandmate Mick Jagger to stay strong after his mystery illness prompted the band to cancel their North American tour.

The group's shows in the US and Canada were axed today after Jagger, 75, was advised against performing by his doctors.

Wood, 71, has now thanked fans for their support after the shock news and sent a message to his frontman.

In a post on Twitter , the musician declared: 'Here's to Mick" and added an emoji of a flexing muscled arm.

Wood wrote: "We’ll miss you over the next few weeks, but we’re looking forward to seeing you all again very soon.

"Here’s to Mick... thanks for your supportive messages it means so much to us."

No more details about Jagger's health scare have been revealed, but he is expected to make a full recovery and the dates will be rescheduled.

The singer apologised to fans in a statement, saying: "I’m so sorry to all our fans in America & Canada with tickets.

"I really hate letting you down like this. I’m devastated for having to postpone the tour but I will be working very hard to be back on stage as soon as I can.

"Once again, huge apologies to everyone."

A statement released by the band added: "Unfortunately today the Rolling Stones have had to announce the postponement of their upcoming US/Canda tour dates..

"We apologise for any inconvenience this causes those who have tickets to shows but wish to reassure fans to hold onto these existing tickets, as they will be valid for the rescheduled dates, which will be announced shortly."

It continued: "Mick has been advised by doctors that he cannot go on tour at this time, as he needs medical treatment.

"The doctors have advised Mick that he is expected to make a complete recovery so that he can get back on stage as soon as possible."
