Rolling lane closures planned for pavement work on south Lake Shore Drive

Rolling lane closures are planned for pavement maintenance July 18 and 19, 2019, on Lake Shore Drive between I-55 and 57th Street. | Google Maps

Parts of southern Lake Shore Drive will be closed Thursday and Friday as crews perform pavement maintenance work.

Drivers can expect rolling closures of up to two lanes at a time on Lake Shore in each direction between I-55 and 57th Street, according to the Chicago Department of Transportation.

The work will last until 3 p.m. Thursday before resuming from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Friday, according to CDOT spokesman Michael Claffey.

Workers will be doing preventative maintenance and looking for “potential trouble spots that might be susceptible to buckling,” Claffey said.

The Illinois Department of Transportation is also preparing for potential pavement buckling or blowouts that could be caused by the extreme heat wave set to hit the Chicago area Thursday afternoon.

CDOT is urging drivers to be on the lookout for workers and equipment and be careful when passing in work zones.
