Rollercoaster fans offered chance to ride original Nemesis on final journey, alongside creator

Alton Towers is offering rollercoaster fans the chance to be on the last ride of Nemesis before it closes until 2024. And the winners of the competition will be joined by the creator of the iconic ride, John Wardley.

The Staffordshire theme park will close the ride on November 6. But rollercoaster fans need not despair for it will return in 2024 after an exciting revamp - details of which are being kept under wraps.

Those who win seats on the final ride - described as "final test specimens" - will receive park access and Fastrack Gold passes. They'll also get to join John ride his famous creation.

John's early background was in the film industry - he created special effects for five of the James Bond films. In addition to Nemesis he also worked on a number of other rides including Hex, Air and the Wicker Man.

Kate McBirnie, head of guest excellence at Alton Towers Resort, said: “We know that a place on Nemesis’ last ride is much-coveted. It’s a moment in history for the famous ride and we can’t think of a better way to honour this occasion than giving fans the opportunity to be part of this special event."

Nemesis was Europe’s first inverted roller coaster when it launched in 1994. Riders experience 3.5 G-force as they race past the rocks and rivers of the theme park’s Forbidden Valley at speeds of up to 50mph.

Alton Towers' other white knuckle rides include Wicker Man, the UK’s first wooden rollercoaster to be built in over 20 years, Oblivion, with the world’s first vertical big dipper, and The Smiler with its dizzying 14 loops.
