In huge health news, eligible Victorians — which includes queer men and sex workers — will be able access free mpox (previously known as monkeypox) vaccines, statewide.
On Thursday, May 8, Health Minister Mary-Anne Thomas unveiled the Mpox Community Pharmacy Initiative, which allows eligible Victorians to access free mpox vaccines at four new vaccination sites across Melbourne and pharmacies statewide until June 30.
The initiative aims to provide more local options for patients as well as remove financial barriers, which can include the cost of an appointment of visiting a GP or the cost of receiving the vaccine at a pharmacy, which is around $20.

The vaccines have also been made in response to the state’s outbreak of mpox in October 2024, which saw 330 cases and 27 hospitalisations.
What is mpox (monkeypox)?
Mpox (formerly monkeypox) is a viral zoonotic disease that is spread through prolonged physical activity or skin-to-skin contact.
The disease can result in a rash, fever and swollen lymph nodes.
People with the disease can be infectious for up to four days before developing their first symptoms, which can begin up to 21 days after contact with an infected person.

While most infected patients suffer a mild illness, others may develop severe symptoms, which would require hospitalisation.
MPox is not a seasonal disease, hence why the Labor Government is encouraging folks to get vaccinated.
Per the Victorian government, the mpox outbreak is mostly impacting those who are gay, bisexual and men who have sex with men.
It also notes that sexually transgender and gender diverse people are at greater risk of mpox exposure.
Where are the free vaccination centres in Melbourne?
There are currently four free vaccination sites operating across Melbourne that provide the free mpox vaccines:
- Northcote — Wulempuri Dhumba Northcote Healthcare Centre, 42 Separation St Northcote, near the corner of Separation and High Streets.
- Abbotsford — 200 Hoddle St, Abbotsford VIC 3067.
- Carlton — 580 Swanston Street, Carlton.
- Footscray — 78 Paisley Street, Footscray.
Both bookings and walk-ins are available during weekdays and weekend operating hours.
The vaccine will also continue to be available through sexual health clinics, general practitioners, Aboriginal health services, public hospitals and some local councils.
“With the free mpox vaccination now more widely available across the state, we are encouraging eligible and at-risk Victorians to get their full course to keep themselves and others safe from this preventable virus,” Thomas shared.
“Vaccination is a simple and effective way to avoid the spread of mpox – if anyone does develop symptoms, we encourage them to immediately seek medical care.”
Who is eligible for the mpox vaccination?
Victorians who are eligible for the mpox jab include:
- Sexually active gay, bisexual or other men who have sex with men.
- Sexually active transgender and gender diverse people if at risk of mpox exposure.
- Sex workers.
- Sexual partners.
- Sex-on-premises venue staff and attendees.
- People living with HIV if at risk of mpox exposure.
- Laboratory personnel working with orthopoxviruses.
- health care and humanitarian workers at risk of mpox exposure.
The mpox vaccine (JYNNEOS® vaccine) is the most effective with two doses, which would be administered 28 days apart for optimal protection.
