For almost 40 years, the Rolex Awards for Enterprise have honoured individuals taking on major challenges across the globe. Founded in 1976, the awards look to recognise those who are making an impact on society, whether it be improving lives or protecting the natural world and preserving cultural heritage.
For the 2014 Rolex Awards for Enterprise, the attention is focussed on Young Laureates. Five young people, all of whom make a profound impact through their work across a range of fields and disciplines, have been carefully selected for the prestigious award. They each receive a prize of CHF50,000 (£32,000) towards continuing their initiatives and further realising their vision.
This year’s Laureates are
- Arthur Zang - Reinventing cardiovascular healthcare in Africa
- Hosam Zowawi - Reseaching antibiotic-resistant Bacteria
- Neeti Kailas - Screening India’s newborns for hearing loss
- Oliver Nsengimana - Saving the grey-crowned Crane in Rwanda
- Francesco Sauro - Exploring the unknown caves of South America
