Rohit Sharma breaks record for most ODI sixes in a calendar year

NEW DELHI: India captain Rohit Sharma has achieved a remarkable feat by becoming the batter with the most ODI sixes in a calendar year on Sunday. In a game against Netherlands in the ongoing World Cup, the Indian skipper smoked Colin Ackermann for a massive 92-metre six over long-on, marking his 59th maximum of the year. This incredible milestone surpassed the previous record set by South African AB de Villiers, who hit 58 sixes in 2015.

Scorecard: India vs Netherlands

Rohit has the opportunity to further increase the number of maximums in the game. His exceptional batting skills have placed him ahead of renowned players like Chris Gayle, who hit 56 sixes in 2019, and Shahid Afridi, with 48 sixes.

Not only has Rohit dominated the calendar year record, but he has also become the captain with the most sixes in a single World Cup edition. With his 23rd maximum in the ongoing World Cup, he surpassed the previous record of 22 set by England's captain, Eoin Morgan, in 2019.

In the list of most sixes by a captain in World Cup history, Morgan is followed by de Villiers, who hit 21 sixes in 2015, Aaron Finch with 18 in 2019, and Brandon McCullum with 17 in 2015.

Rohit's contribution to the Indian team has been crucial, as he consistently provides a quick start to the innings in the tournament. His powerful hitting and ability to score maximums have undoubtedly made him a key player in the Indian squad.
