Rohan Smith discusses Zak Hardaker's long-term future at Leeds Rhinos

Rohan Smith says Zak Hardaker's future at Leeds beyond this season will be discussed 'when the time is right'. Hardaker has impressed since returning to Headingley on an initial short-term deal after being released by Wigan Warriors.

That deal runs until the end of the current Super League season, and Hardaker's early form back in a Leeds shirt, particularly his display in last week's victory at Warrington Wolves, has led many to question whether he could extend his second stint at the club for at least another season.

Smith was asked the question on Wednesday in his pre-match media briefing ahead of Friday's trip to Huddersfield. However, he remained coy on the subject.

He said: "When the time is right, regarding the conversations about the future. Zak and I speak every week and he's very keen to get his performances right and let his performances do the talking."

Hardaker excelled at fullback last Friday, and has made no secret in the past of how it is his preferred position despite spending the majority of his time at Wigan at centre, as well as representing England there on occasions in the past.

Smith confirmed Hardaker will remain at fullback again this weekend but with Aidan Sezer set to return after the international break, plus the form of Blake Austin and Aidan Sezer, Smith said it is by no means a guarantee Hardaker will play there every week.

"We only pick the team one week at a time," Smith said. "There's a lot of versatility in the group which I love and we haven't had everyone available but with Harry Newman and Sezer back in the mix, plus Myler, Zak and Austin, there's lots of moving parts. I don't know what the future holds but Zak will play fullback this week."

Harry Newman will also make his long-awaited return from injury on Friday, Smith confirmed.
