Roger Mitchell roasts Premier League hypocrisy over Celtic Champions League freeze-out as he blasts 'don't dare quote me Shankly'

Former SPL chief executive Roger Mitchell has slammed the hypocrisy of clubs being up in arms over Super League plans when they remained silent as the likes of Celtic and Ajax have been forced into qualifying for the Champions League.

12 clubs, including the "big six" from the Premier League announced on Sunday night they would be breaking away from UEFA to form their own midweek elite league.

There has been widespread outrage towards the move, with fans and pundits rallying against the idea with a ferocious zeal.

Mitchell has long warned that elite clubs have been looking to break away for financial reasons but he's been infuriated by sanctimony in the reaction given there was no fuss when top historical clubs were forced to qualify for the Champions League.

He said on Twitter: "So much anger today in England. Talk about fairness and values of football.

"WHERE WERE YOU WHEN YOU GOT 4 AUTOMATIC PLACES IN THE CHAMPIONS LEAGUES WHEN PROPER CHAMPIONS LIKE AJAX AND CELTIC HAD 3 QUALIFYING ROUNDS?

"This stuff didn’t happen on Sunday. It’s been 25 years.

"How dare you complain only now? You loved the drift of the game to the big leagues. Because you were the beneficiaries.

"Don't dare quote Shankly at me now.

"In life I tolerate a lot of stupid stuff, because some people aren’t born bright, but I never ever tolerate the hypocrites."
