Roger Federer storms into Wimbledon quarter-final after thrashing sorry Matteo Berrettini

Roger Federer wowed the crowd at Wimbledon with an utterly dominant display as he swept aside Matteo Berrettini to reach the quarter-finals.

The 20-time Grand Slam winner rarely had to get out of second gear, needing just an hour and 14 minutes to secure a 6-1, 6-2, 6-2 victory on Centre Court.

Federer may be 38 next month but he showed that he is still just as untouchable as Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic after this one-sided contest.

The Swiss showed a sign of things to come as he raced into a 4-1 lead after 12 minutes and had the first set wrapped up five minutes later.

If the crowd were waiting for a response from Berrettini, ranked 19th for the tournament and 20th in the world, they would be disappointed.

The 23-year-old was trying hard, perhaps too much so, to get something to disrupt Federer's rhythm and it felt like this was the harsh lesson he may have needed after a meteoric rise into the top 20 in the space of 18 months.

Berrettini did his best not to lose his cool, instead choosing to laugh about his misfortune rather than take it out on his racket like other players might have done.

But it was no laughing matter how Federer continued to humiliate the Italian on court as he provided a timely reminder of how his class hasn't wavered in the slightest, even if there were some examples of his good fortune on the way.

Having dropped just five games on his way to victory, the eight-time Wimbledon champion can look forward to a last eight clash against Kei Nishikori or Mikhail Kukushkin.
