Roger Federer congratulates Rafael Nadal after French Open triumph equals men's Grand Slam record

Roger Federer said is was a "true honour" to congratulate Rafael Nadal on his record-equalling 20th men's Grand Slam title after the Spaniard beat Novak Djokovic to win the French Open.

Nadal produced a stunning performance, dropping just seven games in a remarkably routine 6-0, 6-2, 7-5 victory over world No1 Novak Djokovic in Sunday's final at Roland Garros.

The Spaniard made history by claiming a record-extending 13th French Open title, but also by drawing level with Federer on 20 Slam titles, with Djokovic three behind on 17.

Federer's last Slam triumph came at the Australian Open in 2018, but his chances were limited this year with Wimbledon cancelled and the 39-year-old opting out of the US and French opens.

The former world No1 was quick to praise Nadal for his historic achievement, insisting he hopes he and his "greatest rival" continue to push each other in the future.

"I have always had the utmost respect for my friend Rafa as a person and as a champion," Federer wrote on Twitter. "As my greatest rival over many years, I believe we have pushed each other to become better players.

"Therefore, it is a true honour for me to congratulate him on his 20th Grand Slam victory.

"It is especially amazing that he has now won Roland Garros an incredible 13 times, which is one of the greatest achievements in sport.

"I also congratulate his team, because nobody can do this alone. I hope 20 is just another step on the continuing journey for both of us.

"Well done, Rafa. You deserve it."
