Roger Federer has provoked a social media storm by sending a video tribute to notorious Aussie shock-jock Alan Jones.
The former Wallabies head coach is famous for his controversial views, including his misogynistic attacks on former Australia prime minister Julia Gillard and New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern. Jones has labelled Adern “a complete clown” and suggested Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison should give Ardern "a few backhanders" and "shove a sock down her throat".
But the 20-time Grand Slam winner Federer sent a message on Sky News Australia thanking Jones for his years of service before his final radio show on Sydney station 2GB tomorrow.
“I wanted to wish you all the very best for what's to come,” he said. “And congratulations on an amazing 35 year career, take care and all the best."
But the message caused a backlash from tennis fans. One twitter user (@ChumJetzeAnyone) said: "I hope you read up on all the racist and sexist things that Alan Jones has said. Makes me sad that you have sent him farewell message. Hopefully you’ll read what he’s done.
Another (@Cromwell_MM) said: “Please remove your video message to the vile Alan Jones. He's a racist misogynist & bully. Told Aus PM Morrison to shove a sock down NZ PM Jacinda Ardern's throat. Said former Aus PM Julia Gillard's s/be shoved in chaff bag at sea.”
Federer was criticised by climate change activist Greta Thunberg in January for his sponsorship deal with Credit Suisse because of the Swiss bank's investment in fossil fuels.
On the tennis front, Federer also came under fire yesterday for stating he did not want to return to tennis without crowds.
Australian world No.204 Andrew Harris said: “How about the Tour returns when it's appropriately safe to do so and those players struggling can earn some income. Standard selfishness from Roger Federer.”
