Rodrigo insists Leeds will not be one-season wonders under Marcelo Bielsa

Rodrigo insists Leeds will not be one-season wonders in the Premier League under Marcelo Bielsa.

Leeds finished ninth in their first campaign back in the top flight for 16 years and their haul of 59 points was the best by a promoted side since Ipswich in 2001.

Ipswich were relegated the following season and have not been in the Premier League since.

Yorkshire rivals Sheffield United went down this season after finishing ninth last year in another warning to Leeds of how quickly fortunes can change.

Yet Rodrigo is adamant Leeds will not suffer from second-season syndrome and believes they can continue to develop under Bielsa, who has agreed in principle to carry on for another 12 months.

Leeds’ aim is to qualify for Europe for the first time since 2002 and Rodrigo claims the return of fans to Elland Road will drive them on.

“We’ve had an amazing season and, of course, we were back playing in front of fans on Sunday,” said the Spain forward.

“There is a great atmosphere in the dressing room, we have a fantastic club.

“We are looking forward to the summer now, resting a little bit and then onto the next season.

“We hope when we return all of the fans will be back in the stadium. I’m sure next season will be harder than this, but we have a great group and I believe we can do another great season next year.”

Rodrigo, 30, finished the campaign with a flourish and he has been nominated for May’s Premier League Player of the Month for his four goals.

Rodrigo endured a tough debut campaign following his club record £26million switch from Valencia in August because of injuries and the coronavirus and he managed just 14 league starts.

He gave Leeds fans a taste of his talent with his quality finishes against Burnley and he hopes to play more consistently next season.

“It’s been an amazing season for me and the club, I think I’ve finished the season well,” he said.

“Of course, I had some injuries, which didn’t allow me to play more games, but I’m very happy with how everything finished.”
