Erick Pulgar to Jean-Philippe Mateta: Leeds United's January transfer window rumours rated

Last summer saw Leeds United spend close to £100 million on incoming transfers, with the international pedigree of Rodrigo Moreno, Robin Koch and Raphinha all arriving for sizeable fees.

After 17 games in the Premier League this season, Leeds appear to be on a steady course for survival, meaning they will be endowed with another tranche of Premier League TV revenue next season.

No doubt much of this will go towards paying players' wages, as well as the various instalments stipulated in deals already concluded, but it does mean Leeds will have more room to manoeuvre in the transfer market with every year they spend in the top flight.

Given the injuries Leeds have sustained so far this season, a central defender may be on the club's radar, or an additional striker to ease the burden on Patrick Bamford who has started each of the club's league games so far this campaign.

LeedsLive takes a closer look at the likelihood of the club adding certain players this window.

Fredrik Andre Bjorkan

A title-winner in Norway with FK Bodo/Glimt, Bjorkan was the champions' regular left-back, however at 22 years-old and with new workplace rulings affecting the UK post-Brexit, signings from Norway look rather unlikely.

According to the new work permit points system, Norwegian-based players no longer qualify for a work permit unless they are regular internationals for their respective countries. As Bjorkan is yet to make his senior bow for Norway, and has not yet participated in enough European fixtures, it is unlikely Leeds would pursue a move.

Erick Pulgar

Chilean international midfielder currently on the books of Serie A side Fiorentina would not have this same problem, both as an international footballer and a regular in one of Europe's major leagues. He would still be subject to the same workplace rulings but Pulgar would pass the points test with flying colours.

Given his skillset - a tenacious, yet creative midfielder - a move for Pulgar makes perfect sense in supplementing the Leeds midfield with yet more quality, alleviating the task currently on the shoulders of 30-year-old Mateusz Klich.

As a South American player, Pulgar takes up a non-EU player slot in Fiorentina's squad, and the Serie A club are only permitted to field three non-EU players at any one time. With new coach Cesare Prandelli seemingly not too keen on Pulgar, he could free up one of those places by offloading the 26-year-old.

Christian Kouame

Ivorian international Christian Kouame is another who has been linked with Leeds United, originally by La Nazione and more recently by Corriere Fiorentina.

The striker is out-of-favour in Florence having started just five Serie A games all season, fulfilling something of a Tyler Roberts role at the club. Kouame is contracted until June 2024 meaning there will be nothing cheap about releasing him from his deal with La Viola, and Leeds are unlikely to do so for a player with one goal in his last sixteen games off the back of a cruciate ligament rupture.

Jean-Philippe Mateta

Mainz striker Mateta is the latest to be linked with a Leeds switch given his strong form in the Bundesliga's first half of the season.

The Frenchman has an impressive scoring rate throughout his career, netting a goal every other game at Chateauroux, Le Havre and currently strugglers Mainz. At 6ft 3in tall, Mateta is the type of forward Marcelo Bielsa likes to work with; physical, yet dexterous and mobile, willing to work hard for the team.

Mainz are likely to dig their heels in for Mateta who has had a hand in over 50% of their league goals this season. Without him they would almost certainly be one place lower in the table, below rock-bottom FC Schalke 04. It is a move which Leeds could return to in the summer when Mainz are - in all likelihood - relegated.

Riqui Puig

Barcelona youngster Riqui Puig has been angling for a route out of the Nou Camp for some time due to a lack of opportunity on the pitch. Recently labelled as a dressing room leak by boss Ronald Koeman, Puig appears to have been somewhat sidelined by the Dutchman who has allowed him just four minutes of La Liga action this season.

It is likely Puig will remain at the club until his contract expires in the summer because Barcelona hold the option to extend his deal by a further two years, although should Leeds wish, they could discuss a pre-contract agreement with him as of now.

A move to Leeds is more likely in the summer, provided Barcelona do not exercise their extension, as Puig would certainly be lacking match sharpness now.

Rodrigo de Paul

Udinese's star man and one of Serie A's most prolific playmakers looks set to remain attached to the club for at least another six months, owing to the Bianconeri side's €30 million asking price.

In the current market, that would be some outlay for a promoted team not yet guaranteed another season at the top level, but also too high a price for other, more elite sides who have been credited with an interest such as Inter Milan and Juventus.

Leeds are reluctant to do business in the winter window and a deal looks unlikely.
