Rodrigo backed for Leeds United breakthrough and 'crucial' Patrick Bamford partnership

Former Leeds United striker Noel Whelan believes Patrick Bamford will have a better season now that his strike partner Rodrigo Moreno is full fit.

The former Valencia striker joined the Whites for a club-record of £27million last summer, playing 26 times and scoring seven goals.

His first season at Elland Road was hampered by injuries - leaving Bamford to lead the line alone for large parts of the season.

The duo only played together 18 times last season as a result of Rodrigo’s injury.

However, the 30-year-old has returned to full fitness and has been tipped to bring out the best in Bamford who was often left isolated last season.

Whelan told Football Insider : “I think he’d play a lot closer up towards Patrick.

“He (Bamford) was a little bit isolated at times in certain games, not all games but a few games.

“He’s (Rodrigo) one of these people that likes to run past the centre-forward as well. Make those bursts from deep into the box.

“I think that’s what will help Patrick, somebody with that cleverness. Once they play more games together, you get that understanding of each other’s games.

“I think the two of them could be absolutely brilliant together. It is all about keeping that that sharpness, keeping that fitness.

“Those partnerships we talk about all over the field, that could be a really crucial partnership.”
