Manchester City have completed the signing of Atletico Madrid midfielder Rodri.

Rodri, Man City’s second arrival of the summer transfer window, is a club record signing after his City met a £62.8 million release clause written into his contract at Atletico.

Bayern Munich had been in the race for the 22-year-old Spain international but City have clinched a deal which Pep Guardiola believes will end his search for a long-term successor for Fernandinho.

Rodri spent just one season at Atletico, joining Diego Simeone’s side from Villarreal last May.

In a statement on Wednesday night, Atletico confirmed: “LaLiga has informed Atlético de Madrid that Rodrigo Hernández, through his lawyer, and representatives from Manchester City, paid the player’s release clause at the sports association’s headquarters on Wednesday, July 3.

“Manchester City has paid the buyout clause on behalf of the player.

“The player has therefore unilaterally terminated his contract with our club, which ran until June 30, 2023.”

City are expected to once again heavily invest during the summer transfer window.

The Premier League champions are also looking to strengthen in defence this summer with full-back Joao Cancelo and centre-half Harry Maguire both on their radar.
