Rodri reacts well to new Man City role after Pep Guardiola chat

Rodri sees a future for himself in central defence after playing there to help solve Manchester City's injury problems.

Pep Guardiola has seen injuries to his three recognised centre-backs this season at various times and for the trip to Crystal Palace last month found himself with none of them fit to start. Summer signing Rodri , who had spent the first part of the season shielding the defence in the holding midfield role, moved back alongside fellow midfielder Fernandinho to make a makeshift pair for the league match and they reprised their roles for the next game before the Spaniard suffered a hamstring injury.

On his return Rodri played in front of the defence, although came in for some criticism as the Blues lost 3-1. With questions around the backline unlikely to go away at least until Aymeric Laporte returns, the 23-year-old is open to playing there again as he believes his qualities can allow him to thrive there.

"I am discovering myself as a player. Guardiola asked me how I see myself there and I decided to try because the team needed me," he said at a Spain press conference .

"Obviously there is always a time of adaptation, but because of my physical and technical characteristics, I also think that there is something in common with my normal position, apart from certain new aspects.

"It is true that the new position is a bit more delicate, but with time I think I could perfectly adapt myself.

"My virtues make me shine more as central midfielder, but with time I could also do well as central defender."
