Rod Stewart takes band on tour of Kilmainham Gaol to show them site of ballad Grace

Rod Stewart took his band on a tour of Kilmainham Gaol this week to show them the site of ballad Grace – the “most tragic love story” he has heard.

The English singer, 74, also honoured the writers of the lament week by inviting them up on stage during his Dublin concert on Wednesday night.

Written by Frank and Sean O’Meara, the tune tells the story of Grace Gifford-Plunkett and her marriage to Rising leader Joseph Plunkett on the eve of his execution at Kilmainham Gaol.

And despite having visited the jail and Glasnevin Cemetery, Stewart took his musicians to the historic landmark.

The dad of eight said: “Grace remains a most tragic love story to me.

“Today I took some of my band mates to show them the Kilmainham Gaol where it all happened. It’s impossible not to be moved and we were.”
