Inside Rod Stewart's Penny Lancaster breakup song as icon marks 78th birthday

Rod Stewart and Penny Lancaster looked the picture of love as the rocker celebrated his 78th birthday this week, however things haven't always been smooth sailing.

The Maggie May singer previously revealed that he and his third wife Penny had split for two weeks which served as inspiration behind a tribute to their relationship on his 2013 'Time' album.

The Celtic-daft singer chose Tom Waits' song 'Picture in a Frame' to show his love for policewoman Penny following their brief split.

The couple, who have two sons together - Alastair, 16, and Aiden 11, began romancing in 1999.

In an unearthed chat from an Australian magazine Life in 2013, Rod revealed they split for a fortnight and he dedicated one of the songs on his album to that time.

He told the magazine: "I cover Tom Waits' Picture in a Frame. Penny and I broke up for two weeks and the song is about that time.

"I asked her for a photo of herself in a frame so that I could see her when I went to bed and when I woke up."

Rod and Penny eventually married in 2007, and Rod claims to be 'a better person and a good listener after taking 'a lot of risks'.

He explained: "I met Penny in my fifties and if I had not learnt by that point in my life I was never going to."

Rod was previously married to Alana Stewart between 1979 to 1984 and has two children with her - Kimberly and Sean.

He then married Rachel Hunter in 1990 who he was with until 1999, before splitting and romancing British model Penny who he'd hired as a photographer in the 1990s to take pictures of him on tour.

Rachel and Rod, who had son Liam, divorced in 2006 and the singer proposed to Penny atop the Eiffel Tower in Paris.

Penny, who starred on BBC One's Celebrity Masterchef in 2021, said of her marriage to Rod on the show: "I like to take on a challenge - that’s why I married my husband."

Penny has also shared on a Loose Women panel that Rod and their two sons have helped her deal with the menopause, and the brain fog that comes with it.

She said: "I've got complete brain fog. I get anxiety. I'm forgetful more than ever and I've adopted my fan now. I even take it to restaurants, it's a saviour!"
