Rod Stewart hits back as Elvis Costello slams BBC Platinum Party at the Palace show

Sir Rod Stewart has hit back after Elvis Costello criticised his routine at BBC's Platinum Party at the Palace.

The 77-year-old rock legend was part of the star-studded line-up as the nation paid tribute to Queen Elizabeth II as she celebrates 70 years on the throne. However, viewers following the show on Twitter were confused when Sir Rod performed a cover of Sweet Caroline despite having such a strong back catalogue of original music.

Mirror Online reported Elvis Costello addressed the reaction as he performed in Glasgow with his band, The Imposters. He told the audience: "I mean, I know you all love him and he’s one of yours and everything, but Rod. What the f***?

“I must say, listen we all have bad nights vocally, but for f*** sake, Sweet f***ing Caroline. Are you f***ing kidding me?

“I mean I’ve been in showbusiness 45 years so I do know a thing or two. How is it that nobody suggested Rod sing You Wear It Well?”

Sir Rod hit back at the remarks on Twitter. He said: "Dear Elvis @elviscostello, yes my voice was rough cos of covid. I apologise, I though it better it to make an appearance rather than let everyone down so sorry. By the way where’s your hair gone mate ????? Sir Rod."

Elvis Costello has strong Merseyside roots as he lived in Birkenhead. The 67-year-old has since clarified his remarks and laughed off the online spat.

He said: "Dear Lord Stewart. You know I love you. Think the Queen would have loved “You Wear It Well” or even “Hot Legs”. As to gigs, I had a stinker the other night in Liverpool. They come and go, like hair, which I keep sewn in my hat."
