Rod Stewart has hit back at critics who slammed him for singing the wrong lyrics to Flower of Scotland live on the BBC this morning.
Many unimpressed Scots took to Twitter to hit out at the Maggie May singer for singing 'a wee bit heather and glen' instead of 'your wee bit hill and glen'.
But now, Rod has hit back saying he has always sang 'heather' because he prefers it.
He said: "I seem to be taking some stick in the Media for singing the wrong words to ‘Flower of Scotland‘ today on the telly .
"I've always sang heather instead of hill because I prefer it and in case they haven’t noticed, a considerable amount of the Scottish team have English accents."
After speaking to presenters Charlie Stayt and Naga Munchetty about supporting Scotland, they asked the 76-year-old to give them a song and after he sang a few lines of Scotland's national anthem, but many were quick to jump on social media to criticise him.
One wrote: "As if proclaiming to be Scottish wasn't bad enough, Rod opted to sing Flower of Scotland and got the words wrong!"
Another said: "F*****g Rod on the telly giving it the big one with his English accent singing the wrong words to Flower of Scotland. Going to be a long day..."
While one added: "BBC breakfast this morning, OMG if Rod Stewart is going to sing Flower of Scotland on tv best he learns the right words!."
Another wrote: "Rod Stewart, an Englishman pretending to be a Scotsman doesn’t know the words to Flower of Scotland “You’re wee bit of heaven and glen”.
One said: "Rod Stewart making up his own lyrics to Flower of Scotland."
The 76-year-old told the BBC presenters that he would he heading along to Wembley tonight to cheer on Scotland with his two sons.
He revealed that he bought a box for six people which 'cost an arm and a leg' and even joked that it was so expensive that he would have to sell his house.
The star also said that no game will be a better watch than Scotland's victory in 1977.
He said: "Okay it was in 1977, when Scotland beat England with the pitch invasion and my dad was next to me and I said 'dad I'm going down on the pitch!' he said: 'no, you're not!', I said: 'yes, Iam!'.
"So I went down to the side of the pitch and I had a tammy on and the police officer said 'you're not going on there!' and I took my hat off and he knew who I was and said: 'Oh go on then.'
"I was part of that pitch invasion - naughty boy!"
