Rod Stewart fans baffled by 'awful' performance at Royal Variety as viewers deliver brutal verdict

Viewers delivered a brutal verdict on Sir Rod Stewart's appearance at The Royal Variety Performance on Sunday evening.

Maggie May hitmaker Rod performed at the regal event which was hosted by comedian Alan Carr, and attended by the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge.

Sir Rod, 76, treated the audience to hit One More Time, wearing his flashy jacket with his trademark hairdo and leopard print.

However, not everyone appreciated the legendary performer taking to the stage.

Taking to Twitter, one person wrote: "@RoyalVariety #TheRoyalVarietyPerformance I am a #RodStewart fan but he needs to hang up his shiny jackets and 70s hairstyle.

"It is getting too painful to watch him anymore."

Another person tweeted: "That was AWFUL sir!#RoyalVarietyPerformance."

One suggested: "@rodstewart should of stayed at home cause you’ve lost it, terrible performance."

An unimpressed viewer posted: "No thanks. Got as far as Rod Stewart and that's enough. #RoyalVarietyPerformance."

One person took aim at Sir Rod while praising Elvis Costello saying: "Thank god for a bit of talent at the #royalvarietyshow #elviscostello. The youth must have thought what the hell, but WTF was #RodStewart all about. That was the worse thing I’ve ever seen. Penny, tell him to hang ‘em up …"

Others defended Rod and said he'd been misunderstood and under-appreciated.

One said: "Clearly critics aren't Rod Stewart fans as his fans liked the performance. He still has what so many modern 'artists' lack - charm class & charisma. Ignore the critics Rod, you still have what it takes! Let's see how many of the other acts last 50+years."

And another supporter praised: "Love a bit of Rod. Great performance and love the leopard Leopard print outfit."

It's not the first time Sir Rod has come under fire from viewers.

Last month after an appearance on The Graham Norton Show one person wrote: "This Rod Stewart performance on Graham Norton is the worst thing I have seen in quite some time."

Another added: "It was bad already, and then that key change really cemented it!"
