Rod Stewart and son plead not guilty to punching security guard in Florida

Singer Rod Stewart has pleaded not guilty to punching a security guard in Florida.

Rod, 75, and son Sean Stewart, 39, are accused of attacking Jessie Dixon after he refused to allow them into a private party.

The alleged altercation took place around 11pm on New Year's Eve at the palatial The Breakers hotel in Palm Beach.

On Tuesday, father and son were not present in court when their plea was entered and waived their right to be present during future court hearings.

They also indicated they plan to be absent from the courtroom unless the judge demands that they appear.

The father and son were charged with one count each of simple battery, a misdemeanour that could send them to jail for up to one year.

Stewart could also face a lawsuit from Dixon, 33, who is said to be pursuing a civil case for damages.

His attorney Gawayne Kelly previously said: "We are going to come from a civil point of view. There's a criminal case which we're not involved in."

According to a police report from Palm Beach Police Department, Dixon claimed Sir Rod struck him in "the left rib cage area," after Sean had shoved the worker.

Dixon claims the incident unfolded after the Maggie May singer, his son and their group, which included a few children, had tried to enter a private event at a children's area at the resort.

He told police he had "observed a group of people near the check-in table of the private event who were trying to enter the area but were unauthorised to do so.

"The group began to get loud and cause a scene and refused to follow... instructions to leave," according to the police report.

Dixon then alleges Sean got "about nose-to-nose" from their face and "shoved" him or her backward after being told, "he [Sean] needed to back up and create some space."

Then rock legend Rod "stepped toward [the victim] and threw a punch, striking in [his or her] left ribcage area," says the report.

The next court date is set for February 8, just five days before Stewart embarks on another tour with an opening show at the Seminole Hard Rock Casino in Hollywood, Florida.
