Rod Stewart 'absolutely downhearted' as gig cancelled after falling ill

Rod Stewart has sent a message to fans saying he is "absolutely downhearted" after being forced to cancel a gig due to illness.

The rockstar was set to perform at Mt Duneed Estate, Geelong in Australia alongside Cyndi Lauper and Jon Stevens when the show was cancelled just hours before it was due to begin because of illness.

Rod has now confirmed that he has come down with a viral infection and is unable to sing, adding that he is "only human and sometimes get sick".

Sharing a message on social media: the Maggie May hitmaker said: "Hello my friends. I'm absolutely downhearted that I'm disappointing my fans who bought tickets to A Day On The Green.

"Late this morning I was advised that I have a viral infection and my throat is too irritated to sing. I'm only human and sometimes get sick just like you do.

"My greatest joy is performing for you, so I'm doing everything I can to get on the mend and back on stage!"

A previous message from the concert organisers read: "Live Nation and Roundhouse Entertainment regret to announce that tonight's performance by Rod Stewart, Cyndi Lauper and Jon Stevens at Mt Duneed Estate, Geelong, will not go ahead, due to illness.

"We apologise for the disappointment and inconvenience to ticket holders. A further announcement regarding the concert arrangements will be made early next week."

Fans were quick to share their support and well wishes for Rod, with one saying: "Hope you feel better soon. The more you rest the quicker you heal."

Another added: "First and foremost, take care of yourself. Sending love and healing."

One fan said: "Get well Sir Rod. Wishing you well! Call myself lucky to have seen you this Tuesday at Rod Laver."

Another also said: "Wishing you a speedy recovery, these things can't be helped. We hope that you will come back out to Melbourne again. Couldn't see you that that time when we bought tickets around Covid either. We were excited for today. We hope to see you soon."
