Rockies Pitcher Hospitalized After Comeback Line Drive Hits His Head

Rockies pitcher Ryan Feltner was hospitalized Saturday after a line drive from Phillies outfielder Nick Castellanos hit him in the head.

The incident occurred during the second inning of Colorado’s matchup against Philadelphia, when Castellanos made sharp contact with a slider that was hit right back toward the mound.

Feltner was unable to get out of the way of the ball, which left Castellanos’s bat at a speed of 92.7 mph, and was hit on the back side of his head.

The right-hander dropped to the ground after getting hit by the ball and remained lying on his stomach until the training staff arrived. After getting evaluated, he eventually was able to walk off the field with the assistance of two trainers.

Castellanos recorded a single on the play, and Colorado brought Peter Lambert on to replace the injured Feltner on the mound.

The Rockies provided an update on Feltner’s status after Saturday’s game, informing fans that the 26-year-old is in the hospital under observation and is undergoing further evaluation.

Feltner pitched 1 2/3 innings Saturday, surrendering four hits, four runs, and four walks, without recording a strikeout. He was credited with the loss as the Phillies defeated the Rockies, 7–4.
