A man is facing gun charges after police arrested him on a bond forfeiture warrant last week in north suburban Evanston.

Dmarco Whitman, 22, of Rockford, was taken into custody after tactical detectives spotted him about 9 p.m. June 28 in the 1000 block of Garnett Street, according to a statement from Evanston police. He is charged with a felony count of aggravated unlawful use of a weapon and misdemeanor counts of possessing a gun and ammunition without a FOID card.

Detectives knew Whitman had an outstanding bond forfeiture warrant related to a drug case, police said. Whitman tried to run away when officers approached him on Maple Avenue near Garnett Street. He was taken into custody a short time later.

When investigators searched a bag Whitman was carrying, they found a Rock Island Armory M1911 handgun, police said. He admitted to possessing the gun during a police interview.

Judge Susana Ortiz ordered Whitman held without bail during a hearing June 29, according to Cook County court records. His next court date was set for Tuesday.
