The Rockets are signing Cam Reynolds for the remainder of their 2020-21 season, as first reported by Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN. Houston hosts the Los Angeles Clippers on Friday and visits Atlanta on Sunday.
The Rockets are converting Khyri Thomas from a hardship exception contract to a multi-year deal, with Reynolds receiving a similar hardship exception to what Thomas had. Given Houston’s enormous wave of injuries, it was likely an easy choice for the NBA to approve.
A 6-foot-7 guard/forward, Reynolds went undrafted in the NBA’s 2018 draft before signing with the Stockton Kings of the NBA G League. Later that season, he earned a contract from the Minnesota Timberwolves and averaged 5.0 points (41.2% on 3-pointers) in 13.6 minutes per game.
In the 2019-20 and 2020-21 G League seasons, Reynolds has played with the Wisconsin Herd and Austin Spurs — affiliates of Milwaukee and San Antonio, respectively. Reynolds played in three games with the NBA’s Spurs this season, but at only 2.0 minutes per game in mop-up duty.

Reynolds has fared well over a larger G League sample. In three years there with affiliates of the Kings, Bucks, and Spurs, he’s averaged 15.3 points (37.2% on 3-pointers) and 4.6 rebounds in 29.4 minutes.
Now 26 years old, Reynolds is from nearby Pearland, Texas. He played his college basketball at Tulane University.
“A hometown kid couldn’t ask for anything more,” Reynolds told Mark Berman of Fox 26 Houston. “Growing up you always want to play for the Rockets. It’s kind of surreal at the moment.”
