Rockets radar: Wayne Ellington traded to Suns, seeks buyout agreement

The Miami Heat traded guards Tyler Johnson and Wayne Ellington to the Phoenix Suns in exchange for forward Ryan Anderson on Wednesday. In doing so, they reduced their luxury tax hit considerably. Ellington was always likely to be traded or bought out this season so Miami could get closer to the tax line.

Now that he has officially been dealt, it appears a buyout is on the horizon. Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN reports that Ellington’s agent is working with Suns management to orchestrate his client’s release.

If Ellington hits the buyout market and clears waivers, he is a strong candidate for the Houston Rockets to pursue as a free agent. Ellington is one season removed from breaking the NBA reserve single-season three-point record, previously held by Eric Gordon, and would fit well in coach Mike D’Antoni’s offense.

Other wings likely to hit the buyout market fit the ‘3-and-D’ mold better (think Knicks guard Wesley Matthews), but Ellington is a good option to have. If Matthews comes available and is snapped up by one of the several other teams expected to target him, Houston can still explore the robust market.

The Rockets currently have one open roster spot. If they do not fill it at the deadline, look for them to be active immediately after.
