A US military source confirmed that several missiles landed near the US embassy in Baghdad, early on Sunday.
There were no immediate reports of any damage or casualties.
Multiple strong explosions were heard, followed by aircraft circling near the area, AFP reported.
Sunday's assault sent warning sirens blaring across the diplomatic compound, according to the source.
This was 19th attack since October to target either the embassy or the US troops stationed alongside local forces across Iraq.
No group has claimed responsibility for the incident.
