Rockets, James Harden extend birthday wishes to Russell Westbrook

Nine-time NBA All-Star and 2017 MVP Russell Westbrook turned 32 years old on Thursday. The timing, however, was far from ideal in Houston.

Westbrook’s 32nd birthday came just one day after he reportedly issued a trade request to the Rockets. According to multiple reports, Westbrook’s basketball relationship with co-star and close friend James Harden played at least some role in that decision.

Nonetheless, both the organization and Harden made it clear Thursday that they weren’t taking it personally. In the latter case, Westbrook actually replied to Harden’s Instagram birthday post (check the comments section) to show his appreciation for the gesture.

It’s worth remembering that even though Westbrook is reportedly seeking a trade, there are no guarantees that it happens. He’s under contract for at least two more seasons, and if Houston can’t find a deal to the team’s satisfaction, they could opt to stay the course and attempt to improve relations with Westbrook before the 2020-21 season begins.

Perhaps the happy birthday wishes are a good place to start.
