Rockets fall near US embassy in Baghdad hours after chants of ‘death to America’

Several rockets have fallen near the United States embassy in Baghdad.

The rockets fell in the Iraqi capital's heavily fortified Green Zone which houses government buildings and foreign missions.

The Iraqi military said there are currently no reports of any deaths.

Three civilians were wounded after the missiles fell on the outskirts of the compound, before a double mortar attack injured three Iraqi soldiers at Balad Air Base - home to hundreds of US service personnel.

It comes a day after Donald Trump ordered the drone execution of top Iranian General Qassem Soleimani.

Yesterday, the UK Government has called for calm after the US killing of Iran's top military general sparked fears of a global conflict.

Immediately after the attack, "World War III" began trending on Twitter as fears mounted that President Donald Trump's move could draw the US into a wider conflict with Iran and its allies China and Russia.

UK Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab discussed the dramatic ratcheting of tensions with Trump's Secretary of State Mike Pompeo later in the day.

Thousands of mourners chanting "death to America" took to the streets of Baghdad after the US president ordered the killing.

Iran then raised a red flag over a mosque hinting impending revenge on the US.

Earlier today Iranian militants unveiled a red flag, symbolising the need for 'bloody revenge'.
