PALM BEACH, Fla. — British rock star Rod Stewart and his son Sean have reached a plea deal with Palm Beach County prosecutors nearly two years after a New Year's Eve altercation with a security guard at a Palm Beach hotel.
Rod Stewart, 76, and his son, Sean Stewart, 41, each pleaded guilty to misdemeanor battery during a hearing Friday at the Palm Beach County Courthouse. The two did not appear in court, but their attorney, Guy Fronstin, entered the plea on their behalf.
County Judge August Bonavita withheld adjudication. The Stewarts were scheduled to go to trial next month after a previous plea agreement in October fell through.
A phone message left at Fronstin's office Friday afternoon was not immediately returned. Rod and Sean Stewart were charged with simple battery following a confrontation with a security guard at The Breakers on Dec. 31, 2019.
The father and son reportedly became angry and argumentative when children in their family were denied access to a private New Year's Eve event in a designated children's area. Witnesses told Palm Beach police that Sean Stewart pushed the security guard, and Rod Stewart followed up by punching the security guard in the rib cage.
Rod Stewart is a part-time Palm Beach resident and spent part of 2020 quarantining in the town with his family because of the pandemic. He has twice been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, first in 1994 as a solo artist and again in 2012 with the 1970s rock band Faces.
