Rock climber falls 15 metres in Adelaide conservation park

Multiple emergency services were called in after the man fell on Saturday morning.

A rock climber injured in a fall from a cliff in Morialta Conservation Park has been flown to hospital after being winched to safety.

SA Ambulance said the 48-year-old man fell about 15 metres this morning in the park in Adelaide's north-east.

He suffered head, hand, arm and spinal injuries — none of which are believed to be life threatening, emergency services said.

A helicopter was called in and the man was winched to safety and taken to the Royal Adelaide Hospital.

"We had a … male climber who had unfortunately taken a bit of a tumble off the cliff," said the Country Fire Service's Andrew Charlton.

"I believe he was climbing with ropes and there was a problem with his rope system.

"It's very, very steep terrain — it's actually a challenge to get crews down to where he had actually fallen to, but fortunately there was a small track that we were able to scramble down."

A second patient has also been transferred to hospital in an ambulance.

She suffered hip pain following the accident, and said she and the man were both "fine".

"He's been well looked after, it's been an amazing crew," she said as she was getting into a stretcher.

Police said the accident occurred at a climb known as 'Muesli', and that the man was close to the top when he plunged to the ground.

It is not the first time a climber has been injured in a fall at Morialta, which is a popular destination for rock climbing and abseiling because of its high, steep cliffs.
