Rock blog round-up: the fortieth Noel

They often say you can judge a rockstar by the ridiculousness of the gifts he receives, especially if the "they" in question is me and the "often said" bit actually means right now, in this here column.

This week the rule was proved yet again, with blogged reports that Liam gave Noel a trip to space for his 40th Birthday present. This, clearly, is ridiculous. First Alan McGee gives the man a chocolate brown Rolls Royce when he can't even drive, now his little bro has got him a trip to space and he almost certainly hasn't passed his NASA Space Pilot's test. One rock blog was thrilled until they realised "it wasn't a one-way trip", whilst Poshbird05 commented on the Live4Ever forum's Rocketman Noel thread that she was extremely disappointed when she read the news properly:

"Damn! I thought Noel was going to be covering Rocketman". What, so your favourite rockstar travelling to space isn't as exciting, then?

It wasn't very nice weather for Noel's Birthday weekend, although that won't have bothered us seeing as we stayed in every day trying to turn an old gameboy into an i-Pod case.

The instructions are all available here, along with the reassurance that it's all very easy. Yeah, easy if you know loads of stuff about electronics, rewiring, filing and advanced nuclear fusion theory, something that we all know only comes to you when you become a dad. Maybe if you've got your heart set on it now's the time to stop taking those little pills every morning and stick on some sweet Marvin Gaye.

It's been a good week for videos and MP3s. Pick of the bunch is the Arctic Monkey's cover of Amy Winehouse's You Know I'm No Good, notable for the Franz Ferdinand-style funky guitar in the chorus, whilst onto YouTube you can catch Mike Skinner dicking around on a beach with fellow Brummies The Twang. The Modern Age reports leaks of three new White Stripes songs too, although obviously we don't approve of anything like that.

And for those of you currently enjoying the absence of a certain female popstar on the music blog this week, you might quite like to watch L**y A***n get outclassed by Debbie Harry in a rather ropey version of Heart Of Glass. Not that you lot are cruel or anything.
