Rochdale MP Tony Lloyd steps down from frontbench after spell in ICU with coronavirus that left him 'gasping for air'

Rochdale MP Tony Lloyd has stepped down from the front bench after a spell in intensive care with coronavirus.

The veteran Labour MP, 70, will now focus on his recovery, the party has announced.

He was discharged from intensive care at Manchester Royal Infirmary last week.

Mr Lloyd served as shadow Northern Ireland secretary for two years.

But he will now be replaced by shadow policing minister Louise Haigh, who has been covering the role in his absence.

Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer thanked Mr Lloyd and wished him the best.

“I want to thank Tony for his service during his time in the shadow cabinet and on the front bench," he said.

“The whole of the Labour Party wishes him and his family the very best as he continues with his recovery.”

Mr Lloyd has been the Labour MP for Rochdale since 2017.

He served as MP for Stretford between 1983 and 2012 and MP for Manchester Central between 1997 and 2012.

Mr Lloyd was admitted to MRI in early April and was released from ICU last week.

At the time Councillor Faisal Rana tweeted a message from Mr Lloyd thanking people for their support.

It reads: "I have now been moved out of ICU.

"It certainly is a tough condition and it has no doubt left me literally gasping for air.

"But I am happy to say that I am, and continue to be, on the mend."

Last week Mr Lloyd's family thanked the NHS staff caring for him writing in a statement: "He is is stable and responding to the treatment and dedicated care that he is receiving from the brilliant doctors, nurses and other healthcare staff at the hospital."

Several Labour politicians passed on messages of support to the MP.

Diane Abbot tweeted: "Please pass on to Tony my best wishes and how pleased I am that he has come out of ICU."

David Lammy wrote: "This is great news. Get well soon Tony."

While Welsh MP Chris Elmore said: "So pleased to hear this. Get back to full strength soon Tony."
