Mr McArthur, of Rochdale, was charged with one offence of manslaughter of Tracey McArthur, dating back to June 1 1976.

No pleas were entered at this stage.

The court heard the offence took place in Plymouth.

There was no application for bail.

Addressing Mr McArthur, District Judge Mark Hadfield said: “You are charged with an offence that can only be dealt with in the Crown Court.

“Due to the nature and seriousness of the allegation, I remand you into custody.”

Mr McArthur, of Walker Street, was remanded into custody and will next appear at Exeter Crown Court on September 9 for a preliminary hearing.
