Rochdale is getting a Nando's - and it could be open by Easter

Here's some good news for chicken lovers in Rochdale - a Nando's is opening in the town centre.

The much-loved South African restaurant chain, which specialises in Portuguese recipes, is launching a branch in the new £80m Riverside development, which is set to open at Easter.

Council bosses have announced the move today, with Nando's being joined by dessert cafe Heavenly Desserts and Superdrug as the latest firms to sign up to the development.

The firms will be joined by Marks and Spencer, H&M, Next, Boots, JD Sports, River Island, Reel Cinemas and Hollywood Bowl’s new mini golf course Puttstars, in Riverside which is set to transform the town centre.

"The scheme is now 80pc let and with works continuing to progress at pace, we are now looking forward to completion and the launch."

Rochdale council leader Allen Brett said: "Rochdale town centre has undergone a major transformation in recent years, and Rochdale Riverside is a key part of it.

"These new additions will complement the ever expanding offer in Rochdale town centre, which includes fantastic new independent restaurants, Bombay Brew and the Mannerist, and will soon welcome a Hogarth’s pub as part of a £1m restoration of one of our major historic buildings."

As the Manchester Evening News reported the Greater Manchester Combined Authority loaned £4m to Rochdale council to kickstart the second phase of the Riverside scheme, which could see 228 apartments, offices and a hotel built.

Work on site, off Baillie Street, is set to complete in April 2020 with a launch event planned for Easter weekend. Lauren Gavaghan, development manager at developers Genr8 Developments, said: "We are delighted to have agreed a deal to bring three popular brands to the Rochdale Riverside scheme. These occupiers will complement the current tenant mix in the scheme and will help drive forward the leisure element.
