Rochdale fans raise £10,000 for statue of lifelong fan who left his entire estate to club

Rochdale AFC fans raised £10,000 to erect a statue of lifelong fan 'Cloughie' - who left his entire estate to the club.

David Clough, who sadly passed away last year, raised over an estimated half a million pounds for the club over 25 years.

In memory of his gesture and support of the club, Dale fan Mark Cryer set up a JustGiving page to raise funds to commission a statue of Cloughie as a lasting tribute.

The target of £10,000 was achieved in less than two weeks, allowing work on the statue to commence. Now, the statue is in place.

In the fundraiser, Mark said: "David never drove and raised this money walking the streets and riding around on his bike. He preached 'The Dale' to thousands of people on a weekly basis and was a popular figure no matter where he rode his bike."

Mark said the fundraiser was 'driven by football fans for a diehard football fan' - 'whose unbelievable gesture after passing away, will be of benefit to any visitor to the club's ground'.

The idea for a statue of super fan 'Cloughie' to be built on the stands was taken from Spanish side Valencia.

The club commissioned a bronze statue of fan Vicente Navarro Aparicio at their Mestalla Ground after he devoted his life to the club and still watched matches despite losing his sight.

Cloughie continued to attend Rochdale matches despite losing his sight too.

Richard Wild, the executor of his will, remembers an 'infamous' match back in 2018, where Joe Thompson scored - saving the club from relegation.

"David was blind by this stage, so we commentated on the game for him and he cried at the final whistle," Richard said.

The club opened its gates on Saturday morning (September 18) before the official supporters' coach departed for Mansfield Town to allow fans see the statue for the first time.
