Robroyston train station formally opened as new rail timetable begins

Robroyston train station has been formally opened in the north east of Glasgow, the city's 60th railway station.

The new stop, found between Springburn and Stepps stations, will serve the Glasgow Queen Street Low Level to Edinburgh line, via Cumbernauld.

The first train called at the station on Sunday morning at 8.37am, travelling from Queen Street to Edinburgh Waverley.

Transport Secretary Michael Matheson was on hand to cut the ribbon at the station yesterday (Monday), saying: "Robroyston station shows what we are doing to encourage people to make use of rail services across Scotland."

Over 258 car spaces have been provided at the station, to encourage more commuters to use the park and ride service before taking the train into Glasgow.

There's also cycle parking, electric charging points and step-free platform access at the unstaffed station, which took 15 months to build.

During the week, trains will run on a half-hourly service to Queen Street, from 6:04am to 12:09am.

The opening comes as part of a timetable changes across the UK, introduced on Monday, with the industry promising more services, shorter journeys and new routes across the country following infrastructure investment and upgraded carriages.
