Australian Jack Robinson has pulled off a huge aerial before breaking two of his surfboards on the way to booking a round three berth at the El Salvador Pro.

In five-to-seven foot waves at La Punta Roca, Robinson produced a massive front side air on his first wave to set the tone in his heat against American Cole Houshmand.

That aerial may have taken a toll on Robinson's board, which buckled on his very next wave.

Robinson quickly made his way across to his surf caddy to collect one of his spare boards.

But calamity struck again with less than four minutes remaining in the heat, with Robinson breaking a second board as he produced a series of sharp turns on a wave that helped thrust him back into the lead.

Robinson again paddled across to collect another board, but he had done enough by that stage to win the heat 12.33 points to 11.77.

The result sets up a blockbuster round-three showdown against three-time world champion Gabriel Medina, who defeated Seth Moniz in the second round.

"Two boards, two waves," Robinson said when analysing his two broken boards.

"I was happy I broke the first board because I wanted to ride the green one.

"Then when I was on it, I was like, 'I can't wait to ride this', and then 'boom' I broke it. Those heats test you for sure. It was pretty wild, but you take those ones."

Fellow Australians Joel Vaughan, Morgan Cibilic and George Pittar were all eliminated, while American Griffin Colapinto was also sent packing.

Aside from Robinson, the only other Australian men left in the draw are Liam O'Brien and Callum Robson, who will face off against each other in round three.

When the women's action resumes, Molly Picklum is up against Sally Fitzgibbons in an all-Australian round two battle, while Tyler Wright will face American Lakey Peterson.
