Robin van Persie offers Manchester United advice on Paul Pogba

Former star striker Robin van Persie has advised Manchester United to 'choose a position' for Paul Pogba and has suggested where he would play him.

Pobga has once again come in for some (potentially harsh) criticism following his performance in yet another underwhelming United result, as they played out a 1-1 draw with Arsenal.

It was Pogba's first Premier League game back in action after an ankle injury had seen him miss the last two matches and he did play some smart passes in midfield.

However, Pogba failed to get a good enough grip of the game, with midfield partner Scott McTominay looking far more dangerous and useful in advancing United up the field — and bagging the goal.

Some have suggested that the Frenchman is playing too deep in the midfield — which is where he started against the Gunners before being pushed further forward once Jesse Lingard was replaced by Fred.

However, Van Persie believes neither are his best position.

“For him, the coach, for us, for everyone, it's just important to choose a position,” the Dutchman told Optus Sport.

"Choose where you think, and the coach thinks, he plays the best football for himself and for the team.

"I would play him not as a defensive midfielder, and not as a number 10 but in between - [the] number eight position.

"So, he still has his freedom, he’s not judged then on 20-plus goals a season, if he scores 10-plus goals, makes assists, everyone will look differently at him then, but it needs to be clear for everyone."
