Robin van Persie names Gabriel Martinelli as Arsenal youngster he is most excited about

Former Arsenal striker Robin van Persie said Gabriel Martinelli is the Gunners player he is most excited to see develop at the club.

There are a number of talented youngsters who are coming through the ranks at the Emirates Stadium, with the likes of Bukayo Saka and Joe Willock also beginning to establish themselves in the first-team.

Martinelli, however, has stolen much of the limelight with his displays, scoring ten goals in all competitions this season since joining from Brazilian side Ituano in the summer.

There are great things expected from the 18-year-old in the future, and van Persie seems as intrigued as everybody else to see just how good Martinelli can become.

Van Persie hosted a Twitter Q&A on Thursday and was asked by one supporter: "Which Arsenal youngster are you most excited about?" to which he simply replied "Martinelli!"

The former Dutch forward also answered a number of other questions, and when asked about Gunners manager Mikel Arteta, who he played alongside during his spell at Arsenal, he was full of praise for the Spaniard.

He said: "Played with him (Arteta) for 1 year. Very good player and professional. Luckily he realised straight away that he had to pass all the balls to me, that's what I call a great player. First signs as a manager look very promising!"

Martinelli could be involved as Arsenal take on Olympiacos in the first leg of their Europa League last-32 tie on Thursday night before the Gunners host Everton in the Premier League on Sunday.

He scored two goals and created an assist in three games at the end of January against Sheffield United, Chelsea and Bournemouth, but was left on the bench during the comprehensive 4-0 win against Newcastle on Sunday.
