Robin van Persie has twice made it clear who he supports between Arsenal and Man Utd

Robin van Persie ruffled more than a few feathers when he left Arsenal for Manchester United.

The Dutch striker then made matters worse by going on to win the first Premier League title of his career in his inaugural season at Old Trafford while his former club, without their talisman, had to settle for a fourth-place finish.

Van Persie spent eight years at Arsenal and grew into the club's most important player before Sir Alex Ferguson decided he needed the Netherlands international to take his Man United side one step further in what would be his final season in football management.

And as was often the case, Ferguson was right, as Van Persie brought him that final piece of silverware before he hung up his boots.

Van Persie spent a further two seasons at United following Ferguson's departure before leaving the Premier League for Fenerbahce.

He is remembered fondly by the Red Devils supporters who recognise the integral part he played in Man United winning their most recent title back in 2013.

Arsenal fans, on the other hand, see Van Persie as something of a traitor and it appears because of this that the Dutchman has made clear his loyalties lie in the United camp since retirement.

Back in 2020, Arsenal had just recorded a 2-0 win over Man United on New Year's Day while Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was in charge.

Van Persie was providing analysis on the game for BT Sport and appeared more aggrieved than Solskjaer over the result.

"When I listen to Ole, he sounds like a really nice guy," Van Persie said. "I would like to see him a bit more mean at times, just be angry. I see him smiling now after a game like that. This is not the moment to smile."

Van Persie again showed he's more United than Arsenal back in 2021 when he was asked to reveal the best players he ever shared a pitch with, naming four Red Devils and only two Gunners.

He told BBC Sport: "So difficult to name one. I would go for Dennis Bergkamp, Thierry Henry, Ryan Giggs, Paul Scholes, Wayne Rooney and Ruud van Nistelrooy."

Van Persie was invited to United's Carrington training ground earlier this season where he spoke to Erik ten Hag and was also interviewed by the club's in-house media team.

When asked if he could sense something "special" was brewing at Old Trafford, he replied: "I can feel that. Just by simple things."

He added: "People are really happy to see Manchester United play. The whole energy around the club is so much more positive than it used to be in the last few years. So that is like, Erik [ten Hag] earns credit for that, but the players do as well. Everyone earns credit.

"It's nice to see the whole energy around the club is so much more positive and the guys are working very hard for that."
