Robin van Persie delivers verdict on Mikel Arteta that will give Arsenal fans cause for optimism

Mikel Arteta has been at Arsenal for two months now, and while the results have not been as great as he might have hoped, there have been definite signs of improvement.

The Gunners sit 10th in the Premier League, having won just one of their last five games - but only they and Liverpool are unbeaten in the league in 2020.

Arsenal are in action against Olympiacos on Thursday evening, Arteta's first outing in Europe as a head coach, and during the afternoon, his former teammate Robin van Persie was asked about the Gunners boss.

During a Q&A session on Twitter, Van Persie was asked how Arteta was as a teammate, and the ex-Arsenal striker replied with a bit of a joke - as well as his opinion on Arteta's start to life as Gunners manager.

"Played with him for 1 year. Very good player and professional," Van Persie wrote.

"Luckily he realised straight away that he had to pass all the balls to me, that's what I call a great player.

"First signs as a manager looks very promising!"

Arteta joined Arsenal as a player in 2011, and went on to captain the Gunners during his five-year spell at the Emirates Stadium.

Van Persie, meanwhile, made the move to North London from Feyenoord in 2004, and spent eight years with the Gunners before deciding to move to Manchester United in 2012.

The Dutch striker spent three years at Old Trafford, lifting a Premier League title before leaving for Fenerbahce for a further two-and-a-half years, and finally spending the last six months of his career back with Feyenoord.
