Robin Swann says venues could close over Christmas if covid rates rise

Health Minister Robin Swann has said venues could be forced to close over Christmas if coronavirus cases continue to rise.

He outlined that amendments to Covid-19 regulations relate to issues including the reopening of nightclubs and the removal of social distancing requirements from legislation.

Speaking in the Assembly today, Minister Swann explained that the Executive issued guidance to venues and most large event sectors complied, but "we have not seen the same level of compliance from some within the hospitality sector."

He added that if the current trajectory of covid continues in terms of increased infection rates, some venues may have to close over the Christmas season.

Mr Swann said: “We may once again face the possibility where venues are asked to close their doors during the Christmas season but let me be clear, it’s not inevitable, and I do not want to have to reintroduce restrictions unless completely unavoidable.”

Minister Swann adds he is disappointed that some hospitality businesses have not complied to the executive’s guidance, adding “I believe additional measures are now required” such as the use of a CovidCert for specific events and settings.
