There are two different things I sometimes hear from the independence movement.
One is that the "legacy media" is dead and we should stop worrying about it.
The other is that independence is doomed because the whole weight of the legacy media is against us.
Well, can I gently ask which it is?
And can I enquire what you’re doing about it either way? Because if you don’t think The National is making a difference then I promise you're wrong.
The National covers stories others don’t. But it’s not just that they publish stories that others don’t, they uncover them, dig them out, source them and double-check them. It then doesn’t matter how people get the information –from the newspaper, online, on social media or because someone read it and told them about it – they get the information.
Except it does matter, because only if The National is there to do the work will the stories be dug up in the first place.
So if you’re hearing about these stories and thinking "great someone is doing that", or if you’re reading about it on social media but not contributing, then you’re not helping the paper to keep doing this work. Every little helps.
Surely most of you can afford £20 for a year if you’re not already subscribing? It’s an investment in the future of independence, an investment you should make.
