Robin Koch unmoved on Leeds United preference despite Marcelo Bielsa's 'bright light' praise

Robin Koch insists his best position is in defence, despite Marcelo Bielsa hailing his midfield performance as one of the 'bright lights' of last weekend's win over Tottenham.

The German international was deployed in the Leeds United defensive midfield position usually occupied by Kalvin Phillips for the visit of Spurs, with the England man on the bench following a recent knock.

The 3-1 victory over Ryan Mason's European chasing side was another of this season's high points and Bielsa was quick to praise Koch's contribution following the match.

"Yes, today was a very difficult game for Llorente, Pascal and Koch," the Whites head coach said following the victory.

"Pascal had a performance without errors and Llorente the same. Very solid to defend and secure in the management of the lead.

"Robin was one of the bright lights of the game. He defended well and he didn't lose the ball. The three of them, alongside the two full-backs, had the task of neutralising the sector where Tottenham had their best players."

With Leeds at full-strength at the back and the position of Phillips' understudy a key area that they side are looking to address when they summer transfer window opens, does Koch see a future here?

"Normally my best position is centre-back," he told BBC Radio Leeds. "It's not completely new to me as I'd played some games for my old club and one or two games for the national team, so no problem to play in the midfield.

"Normally I prefer playing centre-back."

And what about playing alongside Phillips in the heart of the Leeds midfield?

"Of course," he added. £Normally you have to ask the gaffer this question, but I think Kalvin as a player is a little bit more offensive than me so with me maybe more playing a bit more defensively, I could imagine playing with Kalvin in the midfield."

Any budding partnership between the two internationals may have to be put on hold this summer, however, with both players looking to play key roles for their national sides at the rearranged Euro 2020 Championship.

"Hopefully, we will meet each other, it would be a great final! I think it's special when you play against someone you know, so to play against Kalvin would be a special moment. When for 90 minutes you fight each other then after that you are teammates again."

Whether or not to restore Phillips to the starting line-up this weekend is one of several selection debates Bielsa will have to weigh up this weekend when Leeds make the short trip to Burnley.
